Woad is a tactile stone sculpture inspired by the historic drinking fountain at Duppas
Hill. It features a series of hand-drawn butterflies native to the area, thoughtfully
selected by students from the nearby Aerodrome Academy School. These delicate
motifs have been sandblasted into the surface, inviting visitors to make crayon
rubbings and carry home their own imprint of the work as a creative exchange
between between place, community and ecology.

*What is a rubbing?*
A rubbing is a simple art technique where you place a piece of paper over a textured surface and gently rub over it with a crayon or pencil. The raised design underneath appears on the paper like magic! It’s a great way to capture the details of patterns and shapes.
*What you'll need*
- A piece of paper (thin works best)
- A crayon or pencil (crayons without paper wrappers work especially well)
*Where on the sculpture you'll find the rubbing section*
Look for the raised butterfly shapes on the sculpture. This is the section specially designed for rubbings. You’ll find them along the rim of the bowl - *as indicated in the image at the top of the page*. Gently hold your paper over any of these embossed butterflies and start rubbing to reveal their delicate details!

Aerodrome Workshop
As part of my WOAD sculpture commission for Croydon, I worked with Aerodrome
Primary Academy and designers Tori Simpson and Harry Hosker. Pupils voted to
choose a native species from nearby Duppas Hill to feature in the sculpture (butterflies won - symbolising transformation).
We also built two large-scale bug hotels with students: one for the school and one gifted to a local care home, creating a shared legacy of care and connection.

*What is public art?*
Public art appears in shared spaces like parks, town centres or pavements, where everyone can enjoy it for free. It might be a sculpture, mural, digital work or temporary installation, often reflecting local history, people or ecology. In the UK, it's usually commissioned by councils, developers or arts organisations to help connect communities and enrich public spaces.

Ready to reveal some magical butterflies? Follow these easy steps and become a rubbing expert in no time!
🦋 Step 1: Find the Butterflies
Look closely at the sculpture — can you spot the raised butterfly shapes along the rim of the bowl? That’s your special rubbing zone!
📄 Step 2: Get Your Paper Ready
Take your thin piece of paper and gently place it flat over one of the butterfly patterns.
🖍️ Step 3: Grab a Crayon or Pencil
Use a crayon (with the wrapper off!) or a pencil. Hold it sideways so you’re rubbing with the flat edge — not the tip.
🤲 Step 4: Start Rubbing!
Gently rub over the paper in even strokes. Watch as the butterfly shape magically appears like a secret being revealed!
🎉 Step 5: Admire Your Artwork
Ta-da! You’ve made a beautiful butterfly rubbing. Try doing a few more — each one is a little different!
🌟 Bonus Tip
Use different colored crayons for extra fun, or try layering rubbings for a cool collage effect!

True travellers, these butterflies migrate thousands of miles from North Africa to the UK every summer. Seriously, they don’t even stop for a sandwich. Their wings are a mix of orange, black, and white, and they’re pretty much always on the move - so spotting one resting is a treat!

These butterflies love dappled sunlight and shady woodland paths. Unlike many others, they’re not big fans of open meadows. They even fight over sunny spots - tiny winged boxers, really. Found chilling in woodland glades across the UK, especially in spring and late summer.

Also known (somewhat unlovingly) as the “Cabbage White.” They’ve got a bit of a bad reputation with gardeners because their caterpillars snack on brassicas like it’s a buffet. But at least they've got style - those crisp white wings with bold black tips? Classic.

Despite the name, they’re not made of metal, but they do shimmer a beautiful copper-orange in the sunlight. Tiny but feisty, they often patrol their patch like they own the place. Found across the UK, especially in grassy, flowery areas.

You’ll know it by its jagged wings and that funky little white comma shape on the underside (that’s where the name comes from). They’ve made a big comeback in the UK after declining for a while - so real recovery story. Also, they love ripe fruit. It is by far their favourite snack!

</div>
Super common in the UK - probably one of the butterflies you’ve seen the most without even realizing. Brown with orange splashes on the wings, they’re chill and fluttery, often seen in meadows, fields, and even roadside verges. Not flashy, but dependable and a big player in UK's ecosystems.
