It appears in shared spaces like parks, town centres or pavements, where everyone can enjoy it for free. It might be a sculpture, mural, event, digital work or installation, often reflecting local history, people or ecology. In the UK, it's usually commissioned by councils, developers or arts organisations to help connect communities and enrich public spaces. > [[Meet The Womxn Kerry is Mentoring for this Work -> AboutArtist4]] > {link to: 'PathwaysMenu', label: 'Main Menu'} > [[End & Project Credits -> Credits]] > {link to: 'AboutArtist1', label: 'Previous page'}
CREDITS
CLIENT: Moda QR ACTIVATION: Tori Simpson & Harry Hosker PROJECT MENTEE: Kayleigh Peters PHOTO & FILM CREDIT: Emma Brown Photography DELIVERY TEAM: Perry Haldenby Prof Ron Douglas, Tom Rice, Ruby ETC, Jerrika Stevenson, Casey Scott-Songin, Tori Simpson, Harry Hosker, Simon James, Michael Holland, Emma Brown, Caroline Beavon, Richard Wolfströme > {link to: 'PathwaysMenu', label: 'Main Menu'}
KERRY'S MENTEE
Kerry voluntarily mentors an emerging artist (self identifying as femxle/neutral) local to every public art commission she undertakes. Participants experienced how sounds travel differently at night due to temperature inversions, engaged with nocturnal soundscapes, and embodied bat-like navigation through clicking exercises that revealed architectural acoustics. We listened beyond human hearing ranges attentively connecting to ground-level vibrations and subtle sounds typically filtered out of awareness. By attending to passing trains - their rhythms, vibrations, and connections to distant soundscapes - participants reconsidered their sonic relationship to both place and the more-than-human communities with whom they share it. It’s important to measure how creative time in nature affects people, so we can understand its real value. Being creative outdoors can help us feel calmer, more focused, and more connected to the world around us. But without evidence, it’s easy for others to overlook how powerful these moments can be. By tracking the benefits, we can show why creative time in nature matters, and help make it a bigger part of our lives. Herring Gulls are highly intelligent and adaptable seabirds known for their intelligence and problem-solving skills, like dropping shellfish onto rocks or roads to crack them open. They're also excellent scavengers and can recognize individual humans who feed them (or chase them away so be nice to gulls!). They have good color vision, but unlike robins, they don't see in the UV range. > [[Try again -> Nature2]] > [[Next Question -> Nature3]]
ANIMAL VIEWS QUIZ
***INCORRECT*** Nope, not the Wood Pigeon! Wood Pigeons are among the largest and most common pigeons in Europe. While they don't have UV vision, they do have excellent overall eyesight, which helps them spot predators from a distance while foraging, even if they are behind them! > [[Try again -> Nature2]] > [[Next Question -> Nature3]]
ANIMAL VIEWS QUIZ
***CORRECT*** Yes exactly! It is the European Robin! European Robins can see ultraviolet (UV) light, a part of the electromagnetic spectrum that’s completely invisible to humans. This UV vision isn't just for spotting shiny things, it plays a role in how robins perceive magnetic fields. Robins (and some other migratory birds) actually "see" Earth’s magnetic field as a visual pattern, which helps them navigate over long distances. Their retinas contain specialized proteins (called cryptochromes) that are sensitive to UV light and magnetism, giving them a sort of built-in compass. So while we might rely on maps, robins use quantum physics! > [[Go again -> Nature2]] > [[Next Question -> Nature3]]
ANIMAL VIEWS QUIZ
***INCORRECT*** Not quite... not the Magpie! Magpies are members of the crow family and are famously clever. They can recognize themselves in mirrors, a rare trait in the animal kingdom! Actually, foxes are crepuscular and nocturnal hunters, meaning they’re most active at dawn and dusk. Their eyes are adapted to low-light conditions, giving them the easy edge over humans in the dark! > [[Try again -> Nature3]] > [[Move on -> Nature4]]
ANIMAL VIEWS QUIZ
***CORRECT*** Yes exactly! Foxes have excellent night vision, much better than humans. Their eyes contain a high number of rod cells, which are sensitive to low light and allows them to navigate and hunt in near-darkness. However, this comes with a tradeoff: their color vision is limited. Unlike humans, who have three types of color-detecting cone cells, foxes likely have just two. This means they may see the world in a more muted palette, like a red-green colorblind human. But in the dark, they easily outperform us - perfect for Brighton’s twilight alleyways and nighttime gardens (maybe even yours). > [[Go again! -> Nature3]] > [[Next Question -> Nature4]]
ANIMAL VIEWS QUIZ
***INCORRECT*** Nope! Foxes don’t see the vibrant rainbow of colors we do. Humans are trichromatic, meaning we have three types of cones for detecting red, green, and blue light. Foxes, like most mammals, are likely dichromatic, seeing mostly blues and yellows. So while they may see well, it’s not in “full color” as it is for us! > [[Try again -> Nature3]] > [[Move on -> Nature4]]
ANIMAL VIEWS QUIZ
***INCORRECT*** Oops, not yet Foxes do have a fantastic sense of smell - they can sniff out food buried underground or detect prey trails long after they were made. But that doesn’t mean they ignore the input from their eyes. In fact, their vision is crucial for hunting, especially at night, and their eyes even have a reflective layer called the tapetum lucidum (like cats), which helps them see in low light. > [[Try again -> Nature3]] > [[Move on -> Nature4]]
ANIMAL VIEWS QUIZ
Fascinating stuff on foxes..! The phrase “blind as a bat” is a myth! Bats can see, and some species can see quite well. Pipistrelles rely heavily on echolocation, but their eyes still play a role, especially at dawn and dusk when there’s some light around. > [[Try again -> Nature4]] > {link to: 'Nature5', label: 'Move On'}
ANIMAL VIEWS QUIZ
***INCORRECT*** Nope! Bats’ eyes are adapted for low light, not bright daylight. In fact, their vision is much worse than ours in strong light. That’s why they’re active at dusk, dawn, or during the night, both to avoid predators and because of the sensitivity of their eyes and echolocation system. > [[Try again -> Nature4]] > {link to: 'Nature5', label: 'Move On'}
LEARN ABOUT THE LOCAL NATURE
{embed YouTube video: 'https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxbkIGxrYJY'} Watch this beautiful collaborative animation on how Moda changes throughout the day. Grounded in what I call “Listening Beyond Sound” - a state of openness that excavates and amplifies communities through curiosity - these workshops explored how the simple act of listening can reveal heritage, history, wildlife, memory, and social connections. At Moda Central, residents explored their community through the ears of the more-than-human world, using echolocation techniques, playing architectural structures, and capturing field recordings. These sound explorations culminated in a digital soundscape that reveals the hidden acoustic dimensions of their shared environment.
{embed Flickr image: ''}
If you want to download this .mp3 file, click here! > LISTEN TO THE DAYTIME SOUNDSCAPE > [[Listen to Moda at Dusk here.-> Game2]] > {link to: 'PathwaysMenu', label: 'Previous page'}
